“Once the heels come off, the movement continues on,” said Walk a Mile in Her Shoes Coordinator Thomas Raabe after the fourth annual march. More than 150 men slipped on a pair of heels Saturday October 1st to literally walk a mile in women’s shoes around campus to bring awareness to rape, sexual assault, and gender violence. A crowd of almost 320 gathered in support of the men, despite the dreary weather. The event was put on by the Women’s Center along with sponsorship from the Ohio University Student Senate. Donations from the march totaled over $100 and the proceeds will go to My Sisters Place, which provides service to victims of family violence in Athens, Hocking, and Vinton Counties.
Different from past years, the march ended at Bobcat Student Park rather than at Baker Center. A tailgate before the football game complete with food and drink donations from Goodfellas and Quiznos was provided for all participants of the event. The male participants were honored before the football game. During the third quarter, Thomas Raabe received the student spotlight award for his work with the march. Sponsored by the student senate, this award recognizes students who are promoting great causes and demonstrating strong leadership.
