Frances Ellen Watkins Harper Inducted into Ohio Women’s Hall of Fame

Thanks to the efforts of local activist Lois Whealey, the renowned nineteenth century African American writer Frances Ellen Watkins Harper has been inducted into the Ohio Women’s Hall of Fame.
When I was a graduate student in English at the University of Mississippi, I had the great pleasure of helping Dr. Maryemma Graham to edit Harper’s Collected Poems as part of The Schomburg Library of Nineteenth-Century Black Women Writers Series (Oxford University Press, 1988). Later, I wrote a short piece on Harper for The History of Southern Women’s Literature (Baton Rouge, 2002).  Both pieces were mentioned in Harper’s nomination.
