Contribute to a Care Package, Help a Survivor

Sexual Assault is an all-too-common problem in the United States. According to the Rape, Abuse, and Incest National Network, every 2 minutes, someone in the U.S. is sexually assaulted. 1 in 6 American women and 1 in 33 American men will be sexually assaulted in their lifetime. And the risk increases for college-aged women who are 4 times more likely to be assaulted. The National Institute of Justice estimates that 1 in 5 college student will be raped over a now-typical 5-year college career. Unfortunately, recent events on the Ohio University campus are demonstrative of the pervasiveness of this issue. Three different rapes were reported over one weekend. In order to recover from this horrendous experience, survivors of sexual assault need the support of the community.

The newly established Ohio University Survivor Advocacy Program, an extension of the Women’s Center, is coordinating a project to assemble care packages for survivors of sexual assault who obtain a medical-evidentiary exam. As part of the exam, the survivor’s clothing is retained as evidence. As of now, they are sent home in whatever the nursing staff can procure for them (usually oversized scrubs). After experiencing such a traumatic event, survivors need to feel that they are supported and cared for. These care packages will help accomplish this objective. They will contain the following items in a reusable cinch- bag: a t-shirt, a pair of sweats/lounge pants, new underwear, resources for follow-up care and some “comfort” items, such as tea and chocolate.

Donations of new or “like new” t-shirts and sweats/lounge pants (S-XL) and packs of new underwear will be collected April 27 through May 20. Donations can be dropped off at “drop boxes” in any of the following locations:

– OU Women’s Center, 403 Baker Center

– OU Survivor Advocacy Program, Lower level of McKee House

– Dept. of Social Work Office, 416 Morton Hall

– OU COM Learning Resource Center, Grosvenor West

The Graduate Student Social Work Association will be selling raffle tickets for some gift baskets and certificates at college gate this weekend for mom’s weekend. Stop by during any of the following times to donate to this great project and for a chance to win some fun stuff: Friday, April 29, 5-10 p.m., Saturday, April 30, 5-10 p.m., and Sunday, May 1, 10 a.m-1 p.m. For more information on this project, please contact, Jordan Vincent, MSW intern at OUSAP at: or 740-597-7233.
